DOLPHUS RAYMOND

"When I come to town, [...] if I weave a little and drink out of this sack, folks can say Dolphus Raymond's in the blutches of whiskey - that's why he won't change his ways. He can't help himself, that's why he lives the way he does"

"Cry about the simple hell people give other people- without even thinking. Cry about the hell white people give colored folks, without even stopping to think that they're people, too."

Age: middle-aged (late 40s)
Location: Maycomb
Background: Comes from an old, wealthy family
Dolphus is a knowledgeable, aware man who rebels against typical southern values and prefers to be among the black community. He lives with his black mistress and their kids. He always acts like the drunk bloke in town, always carrying around a bottle of "whisky" (although it is actually cola) in hand and misleading others. He is a mockingbird figure who does not attempt to clarify himself and instead encourages others to misunderstand (only revealing his secret to Sout and Jem) for the sake of his actions and behaviours as a result of it and leaving him alone.
His quotes show his disgust towards the prejudice,  inhumanity and hypocrisy that exists in the white society of that time and explains the objective for his behaviour. His appearance briefly sums up the main issues presented in this novel and he acts as the eye-opener to the harsh realities of their own society to  Scout and Jem.

ATTICUS FINCH

"You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view."
"Shoot all the blue jays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird,"
"Are you proud of yourself tonight that you have insulted a total stranger whose circumstances you know nothing about?"
"You rarely win, but sometimes you do."
Age: Middle-aged
Location: Maycomb
Background: Lawyer, father to Scout and Jem
Atticus is a clear-minded, fair and caring character with great morals. He is one of the only few white people of the time who stood up against the values of his own society/race and for the justice to black people (in this case Tom Robinson who was wrongly accused of raping a white woman) despite criticism. He treats everybody in the same way (which again emphasizes his values) which includes teaching his children in a mature way and showing respect even towards evil. He believes in real justice, not just by law and helps Jem and Scout differentiate right from wrong and show them the correct way to live and treat others.
Atticus' quotes show his non-prejudice, accepting nature and never-changing values. He is the epitome of morality and justice.
